Katharine Houghton Hepburn was a rebellious woman. Often suspected of being a lesbian, the characters that Hepburn played were strong, independent sophisticated women.
She started acting after finding her brother hanged. Her brother was the oldest of 6 children and Katharine's favorite. His suicide forever changed her course of life and she began using his birthday, November 8th, as her own.
Before Hollywood, she married at 21 to Ludlow Ogden Smith. She made him change HIS name to S. Ogden Ludlow so she wouldn't be "Kate Smith". It was entirely too boring for her. She divorced never to marry again, and instead fell in love with a very married Spencer Tracy. She stayed with him in secret for 26 years until his death. She was by his side when he passed.
Hepburn was notorious for her difficult relationship with the press. She was rude and obnoxious. When asked if she had any children, she sarcastically snapped, "Yes I have five: two white and three colored." She refused to give interviews and autographs. This brazen uninterest in the media earned her the nickname "Katharine of Arrogance".
She was famous for her rejection of the Hollywood publicity machine. Although winning Best Actress Oscar 4 times she never once went to the ceremony. She refused to conform to what society expected of women, and wore pants during a time when doing so wasn't fashionable for women. She was outspoken, assertive and athletic.
Hepburn once vied for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind. The producer wouldn't offer her the part because due to her unconventional style of dress and in-your-face demeanor, he felt she had no sex appeal. Hepburn was told, "I can't see Rhett Butler chasing you for twelve years."
Katharine defied what women were "supposed" to be, and told Hollywood to kiss her ass. She was rich, smart and failed to care about the opinions of others. She had a sharp tongue and wasn't afraid to voice her opinions.
Below are some of our favorite quotes by the incredible Mizz K. Peace unto you Katharine. While you were here, you lived fearlessly.
*If you want to give up the admiration of many men for the criticism of one, go ahead, get married.
*Enemies are so stimulating.
*I don't care what is written about me as long as it isn't true.
*Your politicians remain professional because the voters remain amateur.
*Wouldn't it be great if people could get to live suddenly as often as they die suddenly?
